New Jersey’s hotly contested governor’s race was one of the most expensive in U.S. history

More than $259 million was spent across the primary and general elections in the battle to succeed term-limited New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.

The closely watched race to become New Jersey’s next governor was not only the most expensive gubernatorial election in state history but one of the most costly in U.S. history, according to a new analysis from the state’s election finance watchdog.
