Backseat drivers: Legislature should stay out of subway train staffing

Once again, at the behest of the Transport Workers Union, state lawmakers are wrongly getting into the business of telling the MTA how to staff its subway trains. Just like a year ago, which ended with a proper veto from Gov. Hochul, this is a mistake to require in law that every train run with a separate motorman and conductor, permanently banning the global standard of one-person train operation (OPTO). Those matters must be left to labor negotiations between the TWU and the MTA.
