At Old South Church in Copley Square, business people and students paused to have black ashes in the shape of a cross applied to their foreheads.
“It sort of kicks off the whole Lenten season for us,” said Carlos Alvarado, a recent college graduate who stopped at the church to get his ashes before heading off to work on Newbury street. “It’s one of the few days that I try not to forget.”
