Myanmar holds first election since military seized power, but observers say the vote is a sham

Voters in Myanmar have voted in the first phase of the country’s general election, the first since the 2021 military coup. International observers and opponents of military rule call the vote illegitimate.

Voters went to the polls Sunday for the initial phase of Myanmar’s first general election in five years, held under the supervision of its military government while a civil war rages throughout much of the country.
