Maryland House selects first immigrant speaker during special session

During a one-day special session, the General Assembly did not take up the question of redistricting, despite pressure to do so from Democrats around the country.

Del. Joseline A. Peña-Melnyk was unanimously chosen as the next House speaker. Lawmakers also overrode 18 of Gov. Moore’s vetoes, including one to study reparations for descendants of enslaved people.
